The Ultimate Guide to Tracking Your Cycle While Trying to Conceive (TTC)

Everything you need to know about ovulation tracking, basal body temperature (BBT), and finding your fertile window when trying to get pregnant.

Deciding to start a family is one of the most exciting decisions you can make. However, the process of trying to conceive (TTC) can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if it takes a little longer than expected. The most empowering thing you can do on your TTC journey is to understand your own unique cycle.

If you are using a dedicated TTC tracker like HerWell, you already have a powerful tool in your pocket. In this guide, we will break down exactly how to track your cycle to maximize your chances of getting pregnant.

1. Finding Your Fertile Window

You can only get pregnant during a specific timeframe in your cycle, known as your "fertile window." This window typically lasts for about six days: the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.

Why six days? Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days under the right conditions (specifically, in the presence of fertile cervical mucus). However, an egg only survives for 12 to 24 hours after being released. By having intercourse before ovulation, you ensure that sperm are already waiting when the egg is released.

Using an ovulation calculator or a fertility tracker app helps you identify these crucial days based on your historical cycle data.

2. Tracking Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

One of the most reliable ways to confirm that ovulation has occurred is by tracking your Basal Body Temperature (BBT). Your BBT is your body's temperature fully at rest.

After you ovulate, your body produces progesterone, a hormone that causes your BBT to rise slightly (usually about 0.5 to 1 degree Fahrenheit).

How to track BBT:

  • Use a special basal thermometer that reads to two decimal places (e.g., 97.56°F).
  • Take your temperature the moment you wake up, before getting out of bed, moving around, or drinking water.
  • Log the temperature daily in your TTC tracker.

Over time, you will see a clear biphasic chart: lower temperatures before ovulation and higher temperatures after. While BBT won't predict ovulation in advance, it is the best at-home method to confirm that you actually ovulated.

3. Monitoring Cervical Mucus

While BBT confirms ovulation after the fact, tracking your cervical mucus helps you predict when ovulation is approaching.

As you approach your fertile window, rising estrogen levels change the consistency of your cervical mucus. It goes from dry or sticky to creamy, and finally to a clear, stretchy consistency that resembles raw egg whites. This "egg white cervical mucus" (EWCM) is the most fertile type—it helps sperm survive and swim efficiently toward the egg.

When you notice EWCM, it's a strong sign that you are in your peak fertile window.

4. Utilizing Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs)

Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs) detect a surge in Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in your urine. This hormone surge is what triggers the ovary to release an egg.

Usually, ovulation occurs 12 to 36 hours after a positive OPK. By logging your positive OPK results into your getting pregnant app, the algorithm can instantly refine your predicted fertile window and notify you that it is time to try.

5. The Two-Week Wait (TWW)

The time between ovulation and when you can take a pregnancy test is known as the Two-Week Wait (TWW). This period can be incredibly stressful. It's common to hyper-analyze every twinge or symptom.

A good try to conceive app will automatically calculate your TWW and give you a mathematically accurate date to take a pregnancy test, saving you the stress (and cost) of testing too early.
