5 Signs Your Cycle is Irregular (And What To Do About It)
Irregular periods can signal important hormonal changes. Learn the 5 main signs your menstrual cycle is irregular and when to speak to your doctor.
Most women think an "irregular period" just means a late period. But irregularity covers a wide spectrum of cycle patterns, many of which carry important health signals you should never ignore.
Here are the five most important signs and exactly what they might mean.
1. Your Cycle Length Varies by More Than 9 Days
A healthy menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days. But what's more important than the length itself is the consistency. If your January cycle is 24 days and your February cycle is 36 days - that 12-day swing is a sign of irregular ovulation.
Common causes: PCOS, thyroid disorders, significant stress, or sudden weight changes.
2. Your Period Lasts More Than 7 Days
A period lasting longer than 7 days is clinically defined as menorrhagia (heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding). This can cause iron-deficiency anaemia over time and is often associated with fibroids, endometriosis, or hormonal imbalances.
When to see a doctor: If your period regularly lasts more than 7 days or is so heavy you need to change products more than once an hour.
3. You Regularly Skip Periods (Without Being Pregnant)
Completely missed periods - called amenorrhoea - when you are not pregnant or menopausal are a signal your body is not ovulating. This is one of the most common symptoms of PCOS.
Other causes include extreme exercise levels, very low body weight, stress, or a thyroid issue.
4. Spotting Mid-Cycle
Light spotting around day 10–16 of your cycle is often normal - it can be ovulation spotting. But heavy mid-cycle bleeding or spotting that happens consistently at the same time every cycle warrants investigation.
5. Severe PMS That Disrupts Your Life
Standard PMS includes mood changes, bloating, and some fatigue. But if your premenstrual symptoms are severe enough to cause you to miss work, cancel social plans, or feel unable to function - this is called PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), a recognised medical condition with effective treatments.
